How to get a share of 500,000 visitors from the word R4DS
This page is basically going to recap what I said in the R4 Revolution DS page, except I’ll use the phrase R4DS more often.
If you don’t already know, the R4DS is a device which you can put into your Nintendo DS which lets you play ROMs (back-ups of games you already own) and applications you download from the Internet.
The term R4DS is searched for almost half a million times per month in the UK according to the Google keyword tool. That’s only slightly less than R4 DS (with a space). You’d expect there to be a lot of competition for that much traffic, but R4DS isn’t the proper name, so on websites, they type it out more carefully and put R4 DS. Because of that, there are only one fifth of the websites containing that term. This is what I like to call a bit of a gap in the market. That’s not to say it’s going to be easy to get to rank one in Google; there’s still one million other sites to get ahead of.
Looking at the current top ranking pages on Google for R4DS we can see what we really have to compete with.
Top 5 Competing sites for R4DS
The very first result is the official website, with lots of information, over 1000 links many of them seeming to be of high quality. The only thing in my favour is that the website is not UK based, but even so, it would take a lot to dislodge this site.
The next result uses the keyword in the domain name, which is a bad sign. However it’s the site appears to only contain two pages and there isn’t much text on the site. A quick check on my favourite inbound link checker tool, backlinkwatch, shows only 15 links to the site, mostly coming from forum posts. You can bet these forum posts are at very least 4 clicks away from the homepage. This dilutes the value of those links a lot. The links on this page are only one click away from the home page, which makes them much stronger.
Next is an Amazon page selling the R4DS. The page only has 4 low quality links pointing to it from outside Amazon. However the fact that that it’s on of the Internet’s most important websites makes it search ranking strength unknown.
After that are a couple of youtube videos. Again I’m unsure of the strength of these pages in search rankings.
The next 5 Competing pages for R4DS
Next is an article on a large, high quality website. High quality but not in Amazon’s league and still only one page… Hold on, I should probably mention Nintendo DS a few more times.
Following that is a forum thread about the R4DS. Forums threads contain a lot of relevant text and titles and such, but they are fairly far from the homepage where the majority of links point towards. Better yet, Backlink Watch reports not links to the page at all. This has to be taken with a pinch of salt as I’ve seen sites which I know for a fact have backlinks but they don’t show up in the tool. However it gives an indication that there are very few links to this page.
After that there is another forum with a question being asked about the R4DS. This is much the same story as the previous result.
Next is Wikipedia. Oh no. Usually this website would be unshakeable by all but the most important official websites. Thankfully there isn’t a page about the R4DS, it just gets mentioned within a wider topic. The fact that the results above it have beaten the WikiPedia page, show it can be outranked.
Lastly a store selling the R4DS. The page has a PageRank of 2 which isn’t too bad for an internal page but there isn’t much information about the product and only low quality external links pointing to the page.
And that’s the top 10 results. Some of them don’t seem to strong and as if they can be beaten without too much difficulty. The results often don’t display in the order you’d expect them too so you can never be sure where your page will end up, but this kind of research can give you a good idea.
Let’s just hope this page doesn’t rank higher than the site I’m promoting (hopefully other thing I’ve not mentioned here will stop that).
