Getting the top spots on Googlewith the R4 Revolution DS
OK, it’s time to show you some of what is involved in promoting another product in Google. The R4 Revolution DS is piece of hardware for the Nintendo DS that allows you to connect flash memory cards to the DS, to play games stored on the memory card, rather than playing games on cartridges.
One problem with promoting it in Google is the number of ways people type it into the search engine. Some examples are:
- R4
- R4 DS
- R4DS
- R4 Revolution
- R4 Revolution DS
While 'r4' has half a million searches, and 'r4 ds' has another half million, there are 5 million websites containing these terms. That’s not going to stop me trying to get to page one for those terms, but it is going to delay me. Today I’m going to aim for a much more modest variation, it has just 60,000 searches per month (still a considerable amount) but only 5th of the competition. Today’s main phrase is R4 Revolution DS.
We first let Google know this page is about the R4 Revolution DS by containing those words in the link to this page. On top of that we use the PageRank power of our homepage (our PageRank is only 2 out of 10 by the way, nothing great), to give a link to the site we’re promoting.
On this page, I’m going to link to the R4 Revolution page 3 times. Twice to the home page, and once to another page of the site, so it looks more natural, and I don’t want to over-do the number of links because that would look fake too. In Google’s eyes this page is definitely about the R4DS because we’ve got it in our title, header, and text multiple times and in links pointing to this page, and near links pointing to this page. That Google thinks that if I’m mentioning a website three times within this page which is definitely about the R4 Revolution DS, that site must be a good source of information about the subject.
